Sometimes, all you want is a quick shower to refresh yourself after a busy day. Other times, you want to fill the bathtub, light a candle, pick up a good book and enjoy a little uninterrupted time.
Both experiences can feel like self-care, but they offer something different.
At ashbury BLOOM•, we’ve been handcrafting bath bombs and shower steamers for years, and one of the most common questions we hear is: What’s the difference between a shower steamer and a bath bomb?
While both products fizz when they come into contact with water and can be made with essential oils, they’re designed for different purposes.
The biggest difference isn’t just where you use them. It’s the routine, the ingredients and the experience you’re looking for.
Shower Steamers vs. Bath Bombs: A Quick Comparison
| Feature | Shower Steamers | Bath Bombs |
|---|---|---|
| Where they’re used | Shower floor | Bathtub |
| Main purpose | Aromatic shower experience | Aromatic bath and skin-conditioning experience |
| Time commitment | Quick, everyday routine | Longer, more leisurely ritual |
| Essential oils | Yes | Yes |
| Menthol crystals | Used in our shower steamers | Not used in our bath bombs |
| Skin contact | Not intended for direct skin contact | Designed to dissolve in bathwater |
| Additional ingredients | Formulated for scent release and a firm, compact puck | Include clays, tapioca starch and decorative botanicals |
| Best suited for | Shower lovers, busy routines and quick moments of self-care | Bath lovers, soaking rituals and those who enjoy a silky skin feel |
Neither is necessarily better than the other. The right choice depends on how you prefer to spend your time and what you want from your bathing routine.
What Is a Shower Steamer?
A shower steamer is a compact, fizzy tablet designed to release an aromatic scent as it comes into contact with water during your shower.
Unlike a bath bomb, a shower steamer isn’t designed to be submerged in water or used directly on your skin.
At ashbury BLOOM•, we make our shower steamers with essential oils and menthol crystals to create a noticeable aromatic experience.
One of the reasons they’ve become our best-selling product category is their convenience.
There’s no bathtub to fill, no lengthy preparation and no need to set aside an hour. Simply place a shower steamer on the shower floor, allow it to become lightly wet and enjoy the scent as it gradually dissolves.
We originally introduced three varieties: Breathe, Wake Up and Keep Calm. As customers returned for their favourites and requested additional scents, we expanded the collection.
Today, shower steamers are the product we manufacture most frequently.
How to Use a Shower Steamer
For the best experience:
- Turn on your shower and allow some steam to build.
- Place the shower steamer on the shower floor, away from the direct stream of water and not directly over the drain.
- Allow occasional splashes of water to activate the fizzing.
- Enjoy the essential-oil aroma as the steamer gradually dissolves.
One of the most common mistakes is placing the shower steamer directly under running water. This can cause it to dissolve much faster than intended.
Unused shower steamers should be kept in an airtight container after their original packaging has been opened to help preserve their scent.
Important: Shower steamers are not bath bombs. Our menthol-infused shower steamers are intended for shower use only and should not be placed in a bathtub or applied directly to the skin.

What Is a Bath Bomb?
A bath bomb is a fizzy bath product designed to dissolve in a bathtub filled with water.
As it fizzes, it disperses its ingredients into the bath, creating a scented soaking experience.
For many of our customers, bath bombs are about more than the product itself. They’re part of a longer self-care ritual.
You might light a candle, bring a book, place a drink on a bath tray or simply enjoy a quiet moment away from the demands of the day.
Unlike shower steamers, bath bombs are formulated with direct skin contact in mind.
At ashbury BLOOM•, our bath bombs include essential oils, clays, tapioca starch and botanicals. These ingredients help create the appearance, texture and skin feel that customers enjoy.
One of the comments we hear most often is how soft and silky customers’ skin feels after their bath.
How to Use a Bath Bomb
Using a bath bomb is simple, although the overall experience is often more leisurely than using a shower steamer.
- Fill your bathtub with comfortably warm water.
- Remove the bath bomb from its packaging.
- Place the bath bomb into the water.
- Allow it to fizz and dissolve before enjoying your bath.
- After bathing, remove any remaining botanical pieces and rinse the tub as needed.
We recommend using our bath bombs once they’re unwrapped rather than leaving them exposed to humidity for extended periods.
Why Are the Ingredients Different?
This is one of the most important differences between shower steamers and bath bombs, and something we’ve learned firsthand through manufacturing both products.
Although both contain essential oils, they require different formulations because they’re used differently.
Shower Steamers: Made for an Aromatic Experience
Our shower steamers are formulated to release their scent into the shower environment rather than condition the skin.
We use menthol crystals alongside essential oils to create a stronger, cooling aromatic experience.
Because shower steamers aren’t intended for direct skin contact, we don’t need to include the same skin-conditioning ingredients used in our bath bombs.
Instead, we focus on producing a firm, compact puck that maintains its shape and dissolves gradually when exposed to splashes of water.
Bath Bombs: Made for Bathwater and Skin Feel
Our bath bombs require a different approach because their ingredients disperse into the water surrounding your skin.
We use ingredients such as tapioca starch and selected clays to create the soft, silky feeling our customers appreciate.
Depending on the variety, our bath bombs feature clays and decorative botanicals that contribute to their natural appearance.
We deliberately avoid synthetic dyes and synthetic scent oils in our bath bombs, choosing essential oils and mineral-based colourants instead.
Another feature our customers appreciate is that our bath bombs generally don’t leave the coloured ring around the bathtub that they may have experienced with heavily dyed products.
While natural ingredients are an important part of our formulation philosophy, we also recognize that everyone’s skin is different. Even essential oils and botanical ingredients can cause sensitivity in some individuals.
What We’ve Learned From Making Both Products
Handcrafting bath bombs and shower steamers has taught us that two products that appear similar can behave very differently during production.
At ashbury BLOOM•, we use presses to shape and compress both products, but the formulations and production requirements aren’t identical.
Our shower steamers are designed to be especially firm and compact. This helps them hold together and dissolve more gradually when used correctly.
Bath bombs, on the other hand, are round, generally heavier and often require more drying time.
They’re also particularly sensitive to moisture during production.
Too much liquid can make the mixture difficult to shape properly. Too little can cause the finished bath bomb to crumble or fail to hold its round shape.
Humidity and consistency are important considerations, and we’ve spent years adjusting our processes to produce bath bombs that look beautiful and perform reliably.
These behind-the-scenes differences are one reason we don’t believe shower steamers and bath bombs should be treated as interchangeable products.

Which Is Better for a Quick Self-Care Routine?
If convenience is your priority, a shower steamer is probably the better choice.
You don’t need to change your schedule or prepare a special bathing environment.
Whether it’s a morning shower before work, a quick refresh after exercise or an evening shower after a busy day, a shower steamer can fit into a routine you already have.
We’ve also found that shower steamers appeal to customers who don’t have bathtubs or simply don’t enjoy taking baths.
They’re especially popular among people who want a noticeable scent experience without committing to a lengthy ritual.
Our most frequently purchased shower-steamer scents include:
- Breathe — Peppermint & Eucalyptus: A fresh, cooling essential-oil blend.
- Wake Up — Lemon: A bright citrus scent for an invigorating morning shower.
- Keep Calm — Lavender: A familiar floral aroma for a quieter evening routine.
These varieties allow customers to choose a scent that suits their personal preferences and the time of day.
Which Is Better for a Relaxing Bath Ritual?
If you enjoy slowing down, soaking in warm water and taking your time, a bath bomb may be the better fit.
A bath can become a more involved ritual, especially when paired with a candle, a book or a little quiet time.
For many customers, the appeal is the combination of the scented water, the fizzing bath bomb and the way their skin feels afterward.
At ashbury BLOOM•, we’ve found that bath bombs are particularly popular with customers shopping for themselves or selecting thoughtful gifts.
They’re also well suited to gift baskets and self-care collections.
Our bath bombs feature essential oils, botanical details and mineral-based colourants, creating a bath experience that looks as inviting as it feels.
Are Shower Steamers or Bath Bombs Better for Your Skin?
The two products have very different purposes.
A shower steamer is primarily intended to scent the shower environment. It’s not a skincare product, and it shouldn’t be used directly on the body.
A bath bomb is designed to dissolve into bathwater and may include ingredients selected for the way they feel on the skin.
For our bath bombs, that includes tapioca starch and clays, which contribute to the silky bathwater experience our customers describe.
People with sensitive skin, allergies or known reactions to essential oils should review ingredient lists carefully. If irritation occurs, discontinue use.
The important thing is choosing a product designed for its intended use and following the directions provided.
Can You Use a Shower Steamer as a Bath Bomb?
No. Shower steamers and bath bombs should not be used interchangeably.
Our shower steamers contain menthol crystals and are formulated to release a stronger aroma in the shower.
They aren’t designed to be diluted in bathwater or to come into prolonged contact with your skin.
For a bathtub, choose a bath bomb specifically formulated for bathing.
For a shower, choose a shower steamer and position it away from the direct water stream.
Using each product as directed helps you enjoy the experience it was designed to provide.
Do Customers Buy Both Shower Steamers and Bath Bombs?
Absolutely.
Over the years, we’ve found that many customers enjoy both products, even if they have a favourite.
Some prefer shower steamers during the workweek and save bath bombs for weekends or evenings when they have more time.
Others begin by trying one scent, then return to explore different varieties.
We’ve also noticed a strong gifting connection.
Customers purchase shower steamers and bath bombs for friends and family, and those gift recipients sometimes become returning customers themselves.
For us, this has been one of the most rewarding parts of making these products: seeing someone discover something they enjoy and then share it with others.
Shower Steamer or Bath Bomb: Which Should You Choose?
The easiest way to decide is to think about your everyday routine.
Choose a shower steamer if:
- You prefer showers over baths.
- You don’t have a bathtub.
- You want a quick aromatic experience.
- You enjoy fresh, citrus, herbal or floral essential-oil scents.
- You want to add something special to an existing daily routine.
Choose a bath bomb if:
- You enjoy soaking in the bathtub.
- You like a longer, more leisurely self-care ritual.
- You appreciate bathwater that leaves your skin feeling soft and silky.
- You enjoy botanical details and naturally coloured bath products.
- You want to pair your bath with a candle, book or quiet evening.
And if you enjoy both kinds of routines, there’s no reason you can’t keep both on hand.
Two Different Ways to Enjoy a Little Everyday Self-Care
At ashbury BLOOM•, we love making both shower steamers and bath bombs because they serve different moments in people’s lives.
Shower steamers have become our most popular product, partly because they’re so easy to incorporate into a busy day.
Bath bombs offer something different: the opportunity to slow down, fill the tub and enjoy a longer ritual, with ingredients selected for a pleasant bathwater and skin feel.
Both are handcrafted in Ontario using essential oils, and both reflect our commitment to thoughtfully made bath and body products.
Ultimately, the best choice is the one that fits your routine.
